I forced several carefully selected students out of the room to type what they had written on computers in other classrooms (after getting approval from the teachers into whose rooms I sent the kids) and it made a big difference in the overall productivity and noise level with the remaining class.

Having used the "go next door and type" tactic with the morning group, I employed it again with the afternoon students an for a while it worked.  There are a few who have already finished and there is two day left in the week.  I will try and find something productive for them to do.  Maybe edit the rest of the class' essays.
